My Graduation at HD

Last May 16, 2013 was a VERY special day for me.

On the eve of my birthday, I received my certificate for completing the HD Makeup Studio & Academy Hi-Def Beauty and Fashion Makeup Course.

It was an 8-day makeup course that covered makeup techniques that gave students knowledge on makeup fundamentals (skills and products), as well as techniques that complement high definition equipment (cameras).

The course taught me how to regard Makeup as a PROFESSION.

Being self-taught is good, but it is better to listen and learn from other people - EXPERTS. :)

Indeed, EDUCATION is the best gift you can give yourself. <3

Hairstyling Course next year for me, perhaps? Hhhmmmmm... ;)

The Day I Learned Hi-Def

I got to learn about Hi-Def Makeup Studio and Academy in 2011 when I was looking for an Airbrush Makeup School in Metro Manila. Davao City has a few airbrush makeup artists, and when prospective clients ask me if I do airbrush, I always feel bad when I say "No".

So, I searched the internet for an Airbrush Makeup School, and was directed to a handful. I read their "About Us", and honestly it was very difficult to choose one school for me. You see, I don't go to makeup schools and study makeup just because it is a hobby. Makeup is my bread and butter, and when I decide to go to a school, I should be sure that I am getting what I paid for - or even more.

There was this blog who compared makeup schools in Metro Manila. All this blogger could comment about HD Makeup Studio and Academy were good ones - and that blogger was right.

Last April 2012, I enrolled in their Pro-Airbrush Makeup Course, and were my makeup skills put to test! I was like a child learning a new skill. It was like learning from scratch. It was REALLY a Pro Course!

The teachers, Mr. Jeave Gabiana and Miss Christephanie Chua-Sing, are very serious in their crafts. They are not just good makeup artists BUT very good makeup teachers. They would not stop checking your work UNTIL you get it RIGHT.

For someone who learned Airbrush in four grueling days (8-12 hours per session!), I could say the time AND money (for tuition and equipment) were well spent.

My FIDA Experience

I discovered the power of makeup when, during my teenage life, I would lock myself in my room dabbling on my Mom's expired makeup. By then, I learned that an eyeliner applied along the upper outer lash line could change one's eye shape. I also learned that certain colors complement my skin, while others were just blah. But I was not able to explain why. Basically, I used the discovery method when learning about makeup when I was young.

My first ever professional training on makeup was at the Fashion Institute of Design and Arts (FIDA), now located at Jacinto extension (behind Mercury Drug), Davao City. It was a 3-day workshop on Basic Makeup Application and Techniques, and it was instructed by Maybelline's Chief Makeup Artist, Mr. Archie Tolentino.

It was through this workshop that I was able to appreciate the beauty of makeup even more. :) It gave me the venue to learn more about consumer makeup products. But more importantly, it served as my foundation for my professional learning about makeup - that each individual has unique skin qualities, so as a makeup artist (MUA), you should know what products will work well on your client's skin or may just highlight his/her flaws.

Sir Archie provided us, the participants, a comprehensive workshop about Makeup Application. The workshop included skin types, types of makeup brush and their uses, and makeup techniques itself. It was through this very first workshop that I my love for "makeup education" started. <3
